1. I wanted something that was simple to use. I've got a Canon 5D Mark II with L lenses, so I can take uber-high quality 1080P video when I want to. However, I wanted something that my wife, mom, and maybe someday my kids could use. All you need to do is push a button to turn it on, and push another button to start recording. Piece o' cake.
2. I wanted something portable. I can stick this thing in my pocket. Can't do that with the DSLR.
3. I wanted something cheap. I got mine on sale for about $50.
The quality of the video is pretty good. Not as good as my DSLR, but considerably better than my non-HD point-and-shoot camera. The metering doesn't adjust quite as fast as I'd like it to (low-light video doesn't look so hot, and bright backgrounds will look pretty bad too) but overall I'm very happy with my purchase. It's perfect for home video of the family.
